Staying on Healdsburg's historic Town Plaza may not be the country weekends most come to the Napa Valley looking for, but its central location and walk-ability make it a convenient location for urbanites who don't like to stray too far outside a city. From the outside it looks like it could be a flagship for Restoration Hardware or Pottery Barn with street-level entrance and rooftop branding on putty-colored walls an simple architectural lines. Inside, however, the hotel redeems itself with monochromatic colors and 10-ffot fireplace surrounded by fluffy sectionals and simple country reception in the main lobby.
Healdsburg Hotel is built for a modern weekend clientele that likes its Starbucks at 8am, its elliptical machine at 8:30 and a wine tour in the nearby valley at 9am. A charming neighborhood of boutiques and coffee chains facilitates that, followed by a visit to the in-house The Spa accessed through a 1st floor courtyard with soaking tubs and treatment rooms as well as on-site fitness center and 60-ft lap pool. At night, when wine tastings and farm visits have concluded for the day, a dinner scene attended by locals and in-house guests hits Dry Creek Kitchen in an arched dining room with glass-enclosed kitchen hiding prodigies of chef Charlie Palmer of NY's Aureole who conducts a regional menu of cheeses, meats and seafood specialties best paired with a great bottle of local wine.
The Room
A one-off boutique hotel that doesn’t inundate their customers with images and brochures about other regional hotels, Hotel Healdsburg offers a cozy and comfortable collection of guest rooms painted in earthy, cheerful shades of mustard or olive or persimmon. Rooms feature one room layout with rustic hardwood floors laid in autumn-colored carpets with wood club charis in pinstriped detailing. Beds are on custom teak platforms with soft headboards and even softer Frette linens with goose down duvets. Loose details like curtain-covered closets and writing tables too cramped actually work are probably designed with 2-night guests in mind. Bathrooms are lined in Bisazza tiles, but not their most colorful or dramatic, enwrapping concrete bathtubs with porcelain in-lay neat to rain showers and double-basin countertops.
